Last Saturday I read a very interesting quote from the newspaper while I am flying to Kota Kinabalu in East Malaysia to attend a wedding dinner, and I just can’t agree more so I’d love to share with you here.
“By working faithfully 8 hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work 12 hours a day.” – Robert Frost, American Poet.
This is exactly my main reason to quit my job and start doing internet marketing full time. My main objective is to gain freedom both in financial and time while doing something that I love to do. I notice that some of my friends also agree with me but they just can’t get started!
Half year ago, I met with one of my friend for dinner. I was quite excited to meet up with him because he is one of the guy that share the same view with me, who would love to get out of the rat race.
At the dinner, he told me that he just went to attend a preview about methods for wealth creation, which he was very impressed about the speaker and very interested to join and learn from there. I’ve attended the preview a couple years ago and I definitely agreed with him. After that, he went on to talk about how busy he was at work and with his family as well. So, he might not be able to commit himself for a 4 days intensive workshop though he really hoped he could make it.
I totally understand that some time it is tough to balance work and family while you still need to commit yourself to this kind of intensive workshop because you need to sacrifice time, and put in effort to arrange to make it happen.
Later he went on to check with me what sort of business I knew of that can start on part time basis so that eventually he could slowly move out of the rat race. I shared my experience in share trading, forex trading, internet marketing, and other investment vehicles that I learnt throughout quite a number of the intensive workshops. We even talked about some franchise business models. That was a great chit chat session with tons of business ideas, investment vehicles, etc…
After the dinner, he thanked me because he had walked away with lots of different ideas and just needed to give it a go.
Recently, I met him again and he just told me that he was too busy to do other things because of the day job. Well, I am not extremely surprised since quite a few people I know of also didn’t kick start or try anything though they promise themselves they will.
Why Can’t I just Do It?
In their mind, they probably keep thinking about “why can’t they just do it?” “I just don’t have time to make it happen!” “I don’t know where to start…”
Indeed, we always need to put in time and effort to learn a new skill. Think about the time when you learn how to drive a car. Why do you want to learn to drive? There could be lots of reasons, such as to travel from places to places with a car, it is common and convenient to have a driving license, it is an essential skill that everyone possess, etc…
When you had you first driving lesson, you might be anxious, not familiar with the sequence such as checking the rear and side mirrors from time to time, controlling the speed, switching gear (if you are driving manual), etc…Everything seems so complicated and you need to focus 100% in order to drive a car safely. After that, you finally got your license, you drive everyday and slowly you are getting used to driving and you can even listen music and chatting with friends while you are driving. Everything seems so smooth and you just don’t really need to pay attention like you took the driving lessons, because you are already competent.
Learning a new skill is a cycle. It requires you to put in time and effort to master it. Once you master it, it becomes a habit where you will just do it naturally!
What Do You Want
Same thing is applicable to learning any new skill that will help you to gain time and financial freedom. You will need to find out why you really need to learn a new skill (just like driving car). A strong reason will help you to have a burning desire to pick up the skill you need. Stop thinking about money and time freedom and be more specific because they are not the ultimate objective. Talk to yourself, i.e. “What do I really want in my life?” “I need money and time freedom because I want to …?”
What we need to focus is the specific thing instead of the generic (such as money). Money and time are just the currency in exchange of other value. Without the “other value”, they are simply useless.
Finding and Mastering the How
Once you have a strong reason to propel you to pursue what you want, the rest is just the process. You need to learn and master the new skill so that it can help you to get what you want. Why can you learn to drive a car? It does seems quite complicated to drive a car with lots of multi-tasking. How come not many people doubt that they lack of the capability to drive a car? It is because they have seen people driving everyday. It is normal to drive a car so of course they can do it.
Same principle is applicable to master a new skill. It might be hard for you to believe you can survive without a day job because you have seen most of your friends are having a day job and you probably not aware those who earn a living with the new skill they master. The key is to get yourself mingle around with the people you would like to become and you will slowly build up the confidence and faith that you can do it too.
Once you have been through the process, the rest is history. Just like driving a car, no one is proud for himself because he can drive a car, it is just normal to everyone. So, identify what you want, find the how to help you and sure you will be able to live the life you want.
What’s your thought? I’d love to hear your story on how you get over the obstacles and move on to the next path.
