Recently while I was browsing a forum I read a thread surveying the challenges that people are facing when they are running an online business. Again, traffic generation is the top among all the problems. Once again, it proves that traffic generation is an evergreen niche because it has been an issue that majority of the marketers or bloggers are facing.

The interesting and inspiring point I get from that thread is a specific response from a senior member (based on his number of posts and the date he joined).

I don’t understand what’s wrong with you guys. Do you lack of time or money?

Initially, I found a bit awkward regarding this response as it does not seem very helpful and kinda rude. However, my second thought come in when I re-read that second sentence and find that it is indeed very true and makes me ponder further.

Lack of Time Money To Drive Traffic

Do you lack of time or money?

I believe majority of the people do know a few of the traffic generation techniques, such as blogging, article marketing, press release, video marketing, Twitter, Facebook, social bookmarking, etc… These types of techniques are not secrets and you can easily get more detail from via blog posts, free reports or paid courses.

So, what’s the real problem here? If you are tight on budget, you will just have to do everything yourself. Ask yourself a question, what do you do everyday to bring in traffic to your website? If you rely on article marketing as your traffic source, how many articles did you submit to the article directories? Do you still submit fresh articles at a consistent interval (i.e. once per day, 3 articles/week, etc…)? People should realize it takes time or money to create consistent traffic.

If you have some budget, you can outsource the works and get someone else to do it for you. The bottom line is that you must put in effort for traffic generation. There is no “push button software” that will generate you tons of traffic overnight. The closest “push buttons” I found are paid traffic such as PPC, PPV, media buys and solo ads. Having said that, you need to do your due diligence before you start buying traffic and monitor each traffic campaign along the way so that you won’t burn your pocket.

The Root Cause Of The Problem

Before we can tackle the problem, we must know what is the real problem. A lot of people complain that they are struggling to make money online. This is way too broad and we need to drill in to narrow down the problem.

Targeted Traffic + Conversion = Profit

If you are gaining a lot of targeted traffic but still not able to generate profit, the problem is likely the conversion issue. You will need to optimize the layout, the sales letter, the offers you presented, etc…

However, most of the people are lacking of traffic. When they login to their Google Analytic account, they might see only 10s to 100s of unique visitors per month. If that’s the case, you must ask yourself did you do enough work to drive targeted traffic to your website?

Time or Money? Which one is your limitation? A lot of people are not willing to spend money to outsource the work before they see the income. So, most of the time, they are doing everything from content generation to submission tasks, which are very time consuming for both. Most of the time, people will get lazy and bored when they involve in a tedious process and end up getting less work done.

This is an evil cycle because unless you have enough traffic to your website, you won’t generate a single sales and you definitely can’t optimize the conversion of your website.

If you do the work consistently, chances are you won’t be struggling for traffic thought this can’t guarantee that you will generate profit from your website as conversion is another major factor we need to consider.

How To Get Traffic To Your Site?

There are a few dozen ways to drive targeted traffic to your website and you should only focus on a few of them that you are comfortable with. Personally, I love article marketing, video marketing and press release marketing mainly because I can easily tap on these sources with only a single piece of article.

Once I finish an article, I can submit to a number of article directories and rewrite into a press release format with the same content and submit to a top list of press release sites. Eventually, I can convert the article to a video by using Powerpoint and submit to YouTube and other video sites. If you want to take it to the next level, you can turn the article to pdf and powerpoint slides and submit to document sharing sites and Slideshow presentation sites. The content is the same but you are leveraging different traffic sources to get more exposure for your website.

I dont think article marketing is working now after Panda/Penguin effects. We need to be careful while making a strategy in order to get traffic. PPC, Social Media are reliable as per me as of now :)

This post couldn’t be more on point. Getting traffic to your site and increasing that traffic is all about having a plan and sticking to it. Consistency is the key to any long lasting organic seo or other internet marketing campaign.

  3. Hi Ming,

Yes – I do agree with your views. When it comes to marketing and exposing your site to more and better targeted traffic most marketers / business owners either don’t have the time or don’t have the financial backing to properly execute a good overall marketing strategy. There is a proverb that highlights the irony in such a statement; “you have to have money to make money” and as we all know , when it comes to business time is money.

  4. Good question, Ming. Its all about time and money:-) I also think that if you wanna make money on the internet, you have to learn a few basic skills and do SOME marketing yourself. I’m doing a mix of do-it-yourself and outsourcing. Every day i try to get a minimum of 1 good blog comment + 1 forum post + 1 yahoo answer + 1 linkedin comment. This has become a routine and it doesnt require much time. For outsourcing i hire people to do social bookmarking, article writing and submission, and press release writing + submission. But i spend a lot of time finding good outsourcers…

  5. Great post! Everybody is looking for web traffic and we all need it badly:-) It takes both time and money and lots of testing to find a good traffic source that doesnt cost too much money and/or time. In addition to what you already have mentioned, i find the good old foums as a good traffic source and i also get the chance to learn a little bit more everyday by following a few favourite forums.
